KTH Ventures welcomes new portfolio company OrbDB Labs - Enabling reliable AI

KTH Ventures has supported establishment of OrbDB Labs, a KTH spin-off developing technology that enables companies to use AI predictions in automated business processes while controlling the level of risk they are willing to accept.

Founding engineer Fabian Zeiher, Sonia Horchidan CEO and Paris Carbone

AI is increasingly being used to make predictions and support business decisions, but uncertainty in AI-generated predictions remains a major barrier to automation. When an incorrect prediction can result in financial losses, operational problems or legal liability, companies often need employees to manually review AI outputs. This limits the scale and efficiency of AI-driven automation.

OrbDB addresses this challenge by providing a reliability layer for AI predictions. The platform allows organizations to define how reliable a prediction needs to be before it can be used automatically. Predictions that meet the required level of reliability can be handled automatically, while uncertain cases can be identified and routed to human review. This enables companies to automate a larger share of their operations without having to accept uncontrolled risk.

The technology was developed from research at KTH in trustworthy data systems and is designed to work with sensitive enterprise data within the customer's own infrastructure. Potential applications include financial operations, recommendations, fraud and spam detection and other data-intensive processes where reliable AI predictions are critical.

KTH Ventures has supported the establishment of OrbDB through its venture creation process and the Pioneer program where support and funding is provided to turn KTH research and intellectual property into spin-off companies. The support has included financing patenting and supporting hiring key personnel, for example. KTH Ventures is now continuing its support as an investor alongside Navigare Ventures and Trio Impact Invest.

“OrbDB is a great example of how we at KTH Ventures can support the journey from research to a new company and commercial product. We have worked closely with the team from an early stage supporting everything from IP management and patenting to enabling building an initial team. We are very pleased to now continue supporting that journey as an investor,” says Daniel Carlsson, Investment Director at KTH Ventures.
